Happy White Cane Safety Day

October 15 was White Cane Safety Day around the world.

It was first launched in the United States in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.  The day is aimed at celebrating the achievements of blind or visually impaired people.

For people who are visually impaired a white cane can be a vital mobility tool and plays a significant role in boosting their independence.  Canes have been used by blind people for centuries, but the white cane was introduced in the early 20th century; they are painted white to be more easily visible.

It has been reported that May 1931 the BBC suggested in its radio broadcasts that blind individuals might be provided with a white stick, which would become universally recognised as a symbol indicating that somebody was blind or visually impaired.
